FIRST AID DEMONSTRATION
A large crowd gathered at The Heath Golf Club on Thursday 15th February for a First Aid demonstration. The course included CPR training and use of a defibrillator and was organised by John Conroy of Heart ER Ambulance Services and Ann Doolan. Instruction was given by Portlaoise Order of Malta.
The importance of this training was brought home to members a few years ago when a golfer needed immediate emergency care on the course and luckily John Conroy was on hand to provide that care. This incident emphasised the need for a club defibrillator and also the need to have proper training for it's use.
It is estimated that 5,000 deaths occur from sudden cardiac arrest each year. 70% of these deaths occur out of hospitals. Early CPR and defibrillation within the first 3-5 minutes after collapse can result in a greater than 50% survival rate. For this reason CPR and use of a defibrillator may help to save a life.
The Portlaoise Order of Malta have been very generous with their time in providing this course. Instruction was first given on the contents of the First Aid Kit . This was then followed by CPR training and use of the defibrillator on both adults and children. The attendance was divided into 6 groups and all enthusiastically got involved at different times. The instruction lasted for 2.5 hours. As the course concluded, the importance of regularly checking that all equipment is present and working was stressed. It was agreed that this task would be carried out by a group of members and a record kept on file.
Towards the end of the evening John Conroy demonstrated the latest state of the art equipment in his ambulances which included Laerdal Suction Pumps, Combi Spinal Boards and Zoll X Series Defibrillators. John has been a very generous sponsor of the club down through the years including sponsorship of driving range balls, completion of the new 16th green, club competitions and purchase of a club defibrillator to mention just a few. When reminded of this, he modestly replies “I am just giving a small bit back for all the years of pleasure I have got from the club”.
